Smell Gas or Suspect Carbon Monoxide? Act Before Booking

If you smell gas, leave and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place before booking repairs.

  • Gas smell: avoid flames and electrical switches. Open doors and windows and turn off the gas at the meter only if safe, without delaying your exit. Never enter a cellar or basement to reach the meter.
  • Suspected carbon monoxide: get outside into fresh air. For suspected symptoms, contact NHS 111, or call 999 for serious symptoms; medical help must not wait for a gas call. Then report the gas incident on 0800 111 999. Treat a sounding carbon monoxide alarm as real, even without symptoms. Carbon monoxide has no smell.

Do not re-enter until advised it is safe. Do not relight or test the fire.

Gas Fire Service, Repair or Installation: Which Visit Do You Need?

Servicing covers planned maintenance, repair investigates faults, and installation assesses and fits a new or replacement fire.

01

Routine servicing

Book maintenance under the manufacturer's schedule, or discuss an unknown service history. Servicing does not automatically include repairs.

02

Fault assessment

Report failure to light, repeated shutdown, soot or unusual operation. Mention warning notices without trying to reproduce the fault.

03

Installation or replacement

Provide the proposed model and fireplace details before buying. The appliance, gas supply, flue and ventilation need assessment together.

What a Gas Fire Service Includes

A gas fire service follows the instructions for the exact appliance and checks its condition, operation, ventilation and applicable flue arrangements.

01

Appliance identification

establish the model and correct manual; record the appliance identity and instructions used.

02

Accessible condition

inspect for deterioration or damage within the prescribed scope; note defects and access limitations.

03

Burner and ignition

carry out the maintenance specified for that design; note work completed and operating concerns.

04

Fuel bed or radiants

assess the model's components and arrangement against its instructions; note damage or unsuitable parts.

05

Safety devices

check applicable devices, including flame supervision where fitted; record relevant outcomes.

06

Gas operation

perform prescribed operating checks, such as working pressure or gas rate where required; record applicable results.

07

Ventilation

assess required air provision for the appliance and room; note obstructions or concerns.

08

Flue and combustion

assess the applicable flue arrangement and prescribed draught, spillage or combustion checks; record results and limitations.

09

Findings

distinguish completed maintenance, additional repair needs and safety concerns; identify outstanding action.

The model determines the work, tests and recorded findings. Discuss the following with the engineer:

A clean appearance alone does not establish safe operation. Not every fire requires the same tests. Confirm the service scope and record provided when booking; additional repairs need separate discussion.

Discuss Your Boiler Problem

How Your Gas Fire Appointment Works

Your appointment starts with identifying the fire and the work needed.

1

Describe the job

give your postcode, model, symptoms, service history and any warning notice.

2

Confirm suitability

establish whether the appliance and requested work are supported before arranging attendance.

3

Assess the installation

the engineer checks the fire and explains the proposed work.

4

Review the outcome

discuss completed work, findings, available records and outstanding action.

Use an existing manual or safely obtainable photograph. Never dismantle the fire, open a boiler casing or work on gas yourself.

Gas Fire Repairs and Replacement Decisions

Gas fire repairs start with identifying the fault and whether suitable parts can support a safe repair.

Replacement Coals and Radiants Must Match the Fire

Replacement coals and radiants must suit the exact appliance and its manufacturer's instructions. These components are not interchangeable ornaments. Do not rearrange them yourself.

Provide the model, observed damage and existing parts information so replacement scope can be checked.

Damaged Glass and Replacement Inserts Need Assessment

Damaged glass or a proposed replacement insert needs assessment before use or alteration. Appliance glass, seals and a complete inset fire involve different work.

Keep a fire with damaged glass off. Describe the damage and model; cleaning cannot establish safety or resolve damaged seals.

Failure to light or repeated shutdown may involve ignition, controls, safety devices or installation conditions.

  • Repair: assess the fault, overall condition and availability of compatible parts.
  • Replacement: consider assessment findings, recurring faults and whether repair remains practical.

Gas Fire Installation and Replacement in London

Gas fire installation starts with checking the proposed appliance against the property, gas supply, fireplace, flue and ventilation.

Flue and Ventilation Checks Depend on the Appliance

Flue and ventilation requirements depend on the fire's design and location.

  • Open-flued: room air and the route carrying combustion products outside need assessment.
  • Balanced-flue: the room-sealed arrangement and external terminal must suit the appliance.
  • Flueless: room and ventilation requirements still apply; support for the proposed model needs confirmation.

Keep required vents unobstructed. Measurements and tests belong to the engineer's assessment.

A Fireplace with a Back Boiler Needs Separate Scope Checks

A fire with a back boiler must be identified as a combined installation before replacement or removal is discussed. Provide both appliance identities, current use and available manuals.

Compatibility, removal and fireplace building work require separate scope checks. A new heating appliance is a separate assessed job:

Boiler installation and replacement

An assessment considers:

  • The exact appliance and manufacturer's requirements.
  • The fireplace opening, hearth and condition.
  • Gas supply suitability and any alterations.
  • Flue route, terminal and ventilation requirements.
  • Agreed fitting scope, commissioning and handover.

Discuss a customer-selected fire before purchase. Appliance supply must be confirmed separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should a Rarely Used Gas Fire Be Serviced, and Does Chimney Sweeping Replace It?

HSE advises annual gas-appliance servicing even with infrequent use; chimney sweeping does not replace it. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, retain records and mention unknown service history. A chimney or flue may need separate attention, while the fire still needs its own inspection and maintenance.

Can I Arrange a Boiler and Gas Fire Service Together?

Ask about both when booking; each appliance needs its own scope of work. Provide both models so relevant engineer qualifications, work required and appointment availability can be checked. Combined scheduling must be confirmed. See boiler servicing in London for the boiler's separate service scope.

Can You Service a Gazco Gas Fire?

Give us the exact Gazco model so support can be confirmed before booking. Share any existing manual and explain whether you need routine maintenance or fault investigation. The model and relevant engineer qualifications determine suitability; a brand name alone does not establish coverage.

Can a Flueless Gas Fire Go in Any Room?

No, a flueless fire still needs assessment against its manufacturer's room, ventilation and installation requirements. Provide the proposed room, exact model and existing ventilation details. Support for that appliance must also be confirmed before booking; the absence of a chimney does not establish suitability.

Can You Disconnect a Gas Fire Before I Replace It with an Electric Fire?

Disconnection needs a separate gas-work enquiry before an electric replacement is fitted. Tell us whether a back boiler is present, what you want removed and whether pipework will remain. The gas-side scope must be confirmed separately from supplying or fitting the electric appliance.

What Happens If the Engineer Finds the Fire Is Unsafe?

An unsafe finding must be explained, and the fire must remain unused until the required safety action is completed. Follow the warning and instructions given. Further investigation, repair or replacement depends on the evidence; an unsafe finding does not automatically mean a replacement is the only option.
