Smell Gas or Suspect Carbon Monoxide? Act Before Booking
Leave and seek emergency help before booking if you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide.
Smell gas: Avoid flames and electrical switches. Open doors and windows and turn off the gas at the meter only if safe, without delaying your escape. Leave and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place.
Carbon monoxide: CO has no smell. Take a sounding alarm seriously and get outside into fresh air. For suspected exposure or symptoms, seek medical help through NHS 111, or 999 if symptoms are serious. Then contact 0800 111 999; the gas call must not delay medical help. Do not re-enter until advised that it is safe.
Gas Cooker Connection, Hob Fitting and Range Installation
We connect and disconnect domestic gas cooking appliances, with checks suited to each appliance and layout. Tell us which job you need; confirm fitting arrangements separately from appliance purchase and delivery.
New Cooker Connection
A freestanding cooker needs assessment of its position, gas supply and connection requirements.
Cooker Replacement
Replacing an existing cooker still requires checks against the new model’s installation instructions.
Built-In Gas Hob Fitting
Hob fitting involves checking the opening, surrounding space and access to the connection.
Cooking-Only Range Installation
Provide the exact range model so its suitability and installation requirements can be assessed.
Planned Disconnection
Ask about disconnection when removing a cooker or preparing for kitchen changes.
What Must Be Checked Before Your Cooker or Hob Can Be Connected?
A cooker or hob can be connected only after the engineer assesses the appliance, gas supply and installation position against applicable requirements.
Provide model details and photographs only from safely accessible positions. Do not move a connected appliance or expose fittings. An existing bayonet socket does not establish suitability. Assessment may identify additional work before connection can proceed.
Appliance Model and Fuel
Tell us: The make, model and stated fuel type. Engineer checks: Compatibility with the supply and manufacturer’s instructions. Possible change: An unsuitable appliance cannot be connected as proposed.
Existing Connection and Pipework
Tell us: Whether an appliance is already connected. Engineer checks: The connection and accessible pipework condition. Possible change: Alterations or repairs may be needed before fitting.
Space and Clearances
Tell us: The intended position and surrounding kitchen layout. Engineer checks: Appliance dimensions and required clearances. Possible change: The position or surrounding units may need reconsideration.
Ventilation and Room Suitability
Tell us: Where the appliance will be used. Engineer checks: Room suitability and ventilation requirements for that model. Possible change: Installation may need to wait for necessary changes.
Hob Opening and Access
Tell us: Whether you are replacing a built-in hob. Engineer checks: The opening and access for installation. Possible change: Worktop or cabinetry alterations need separate scope confirmation.
Stability, Testing and Handover
Tell us: Whether instructions and supplied fittings are available. Engineer checks: Stability arrangements, gas tightness and safe operation as applicable. Possible change: Missing components or failed checks may prevent completion.
What Happens During the Installation Visit?
The visit involves assessing suitability, completing the agreed gas work where safe, checking operation and explaining the outcome.
Confirm the job
The engineer checks the appliance model, intended position and whether connection, replacement or disconnection is required.
Assess the installation
Any additional requirements are explained before the scope is agreed. Unsuitable conditions may prevent installation.
Complete and check the work
The engineer undertakes the agreed gas work and applicable safety and operating checks.
Explain the outcome
For a completed installation, the handover covers user controls and the agreed job record. If work cannot proceed, establish what needs resolving.
Keeping the Same Position or Moving Your Cooker?
Keeping the same position still requires suitability checks; moving a cooker may also require pipework and kitchen changes.
- Existing-position replacement: Matching the old cooker’s nominal width does not confirm clearances or connection suitability. A replacement hob also needs its opening checked.
- Different size or position: Share the proposed model and location before arranging work. Pipework alterations and any associated kitchen work need assessment and scope confirmation.
When the Job Needs Gas Pipework Alterations or Repair
Gas pipework work may be needed if the existing connection is unsuitable, damaged or in the wrong position.
Extending, relocating or repairing pipework adds to the appliance connection job. Photographs can help explain the layout, but cannot confirm pipe condition or supply suitability. See our gas pipework alterations and leak repair service.
Suspected gas escapes follow the emergency instructions above first. Repair arrangements come after the immediate danger has been addressed.
What affects the cost
What Affects Gas Cooker and Hob Installation Cost?
Installation cost depends on the appliance, existing connection, access and additional work required.
Call for a price for your job. Confirm labour, materials, VAT treatment and exclusions when discussing the price. Ask separately about carrying, collection and disposal.
Typical London prices
- Gas cooker or hob connection: £75-£200 + VAT
Typical London price range, plus VAT at 20%. Your price depends on the boiler, the fault, the parts and when the work is done; ask on the call.
Job type
Connection, replacement and standalone disconnection involve different work.
Appliance layout
A built-in hob has different access considerations from a freestanding cooker.
Old appliance
Tell us whether it remains connected.
Connection materials
Required components depend on the assessed installation.
Pipework
Relocation or repairs can change the scope.
Kitchen access
Restricted access or separately agreed kitchen alterations may affect the job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Connect a Gas Cooker to a Bayonet Fitting Myself?
Arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer with the appropriate cooking qualifications for a new cooker installation. An existing bayonet fitting does not establish that the appliance, connector or kitchen arrangement is suitable. Installation involves safety checks beyond attaching a hose. Never undertake gas work yourself; discuss the exact appliance and connection with the engineer.
Will I Receive a Gas Cooker or Hob Installation Certificate?
Confirm which installation record you will receive when booking and whether any notification requirements apply to your particular work. An installer’s job record and a Building Regulations compliance certificate are different documents. Do not assume every cooker or hob installation receives identical paperwork. Ask what the record covers and retain it with the appliance instructions.
Can You Install a Gas Cooker Bought From a Retailer?
Call with the exact model to confirm whether we can accept your retailer-bought cooker and agree the fitting scope before booking. Have the manufacturer’s installation instructions available. Retailer delivery and any installation package are separate arrangements, so establish who is doing each part of the job before choosing dates.
Does a Dual-Fuel Cooker Booking Include Both Connections?
Do not assume both connections are included; the gas and electrical requirements need separate clarification for the exact model. Ask whether we can undertake the gas portion and what that booking covers. Have the installation instructions available so the required supplies can be identified. Confirm electrical arrangements before treating the appliance as ready for use.
Can I Book Gas Cooker Disconnection Without a New Installation?
Yes, gas cooker disconnection can be arranged separately from installing a replacement. Explain whether the cooker is being removed or the kitchen layout is changing. The engineer assesses the connection and completes the applicable checks to leave the gas installation safe. Confirm carrying, collection and disposal separately when discussing the job.
Can Installation Be Arranged Around Next-Day Cooker Delivery?
Call with the delivery date and appliance model so installation availability can be checked separately. A retailer’s next-day delivery promise does not establish an installation appointment. The appliance must be available, and the installation conditions still need assessment. Tell us if delivery is pending or changes so the booking arrangements can be discussed.
