Gas Safety Checks
How to Check a Gas Safe Engineer Before You Let Them In
Before a London boiler appointment, check the engineer’s current Gas Safe Register entry, match their ID card to the person at your door, and confirm their qualifications cover your job. If you smell gas, leave and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
The “gas safety register” means the Gas Safe Register. Use the checklist below before booking and when the engineer arrives. This guide is part of our Boiler and Heating Guides.
Call with your postcode, the boiler make and any fault code showing.
- Gas Safe registered: 648977
- Phone line open 24/7
- Same-day appointments available
Smell Gas or Suspect Carbon Monoxide? Act Before Checking Credentials
If you smell gas, leave and call 0800 111 999 from a safe place; suspected carbon monoxide exposure needs fresh air and prompt medical help.
- Smell gas: avoid flames and electrical switches. Open doors and windows and turn off the gas at the meter only if safe, without delaying your exit. Do not enter a cellar or basement to reach the meter. Call the National Gas Emergency Service before arranging repairs.
- Suspect carbon monoxide: get everyone outside into fresh air. For suspected symptoms, contact NHS 111, or 999 if serious. Contact 0800 111 999 about the suspected gas-appliance danger without delaying medical help. Treat a sounding CO alarm as real: carbon monoxide has no smell.
Do not re-enter until advised it is safe. Credential checks and booking can wait.
How to Check the Gas Safety Register Before Work Starts
Check the Gas Safe Register, then compare the result with the engineer’s current ID card and the work you have booked.
- Identify the business: request its trading name and business registration number. Compare these with the official record. Ask for clarification if the booking name differs.
- Identify the engineer: request the attending engineer’s name and licence details. A business registration number does not identify the individual visitor.
- Check independently: use the Register’s public checking service or contact the Register directly. If you cannot confirm a matching record, pause before work begins.
- Match the person: compare the visitor with the card photograph and name. Resolve any mismatch with the booking business and the Register.
- Check dates: inspect card validity and the dates against relevant qualifications. Ask the Register to clarify anything expired or unclear.
- Match the job: confirm qualifications cover the appliance, fuel and booked work. Do not assume that registration covers every gas task.
Proceed only when identity, registration and qualification questions have been resolved. A card or company logo alone does not complete these checks.
Check the Business and the Individual Separately
A business registration identifies the registered business; an engineer’s licence identifies the person you need to check.
- Business: obtain the registered identity and business registration number before the appointment.
- Engineer: obtain the individual’s licence details, then compare their current ID card with the person who arrives.
Confirm which registered business the engineer is working under for your appointment. If that differs from the business you booked, ask for an explanation and verify the relationship before gas work starts.
Match the Front of the Gas Safe ID Card to the Person
Compare the card’s photograph and name with the person at your door, then check its validity and identifying details.
Look for:
- Photograph and name: these must identify the attending engineer.
- Business details: compare these with your booking.
- Licence details: use these for independent verification.
- Validity dates: check that the card is current.
Gas Safe Register’s consumer guidance explains the purpose of these details. An old photograph of a card, a van logo or a business card cannot replace checking the current visitor.
Check That the Work Categories Cover Your Boiler Job
The engineer’s current qualifications must cover the gas appliance and work you are asking them to undertake.
Check the qualifications and dates on the reverse of the card. HSE advises checking competence for the specific area of gas work.
- Boiler repair: confirm coverage for your domestic natural-gas boiler and the repair work.
- Boiler service: confirm relevant boiler qualifications remain current; another appliance category is insufficient.
- Boiler installation: confirm suitability for the installation work rather than assuming a previous repair appointment establishes it.
Ask Gas Safe Register to explain ambiguous category wording or restrictions before work begins.
CORGI Registered Gas Engineer or Gas Safe Register: Which Counts Today?
Check current Gas Safe registration: Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the registration body in Great Britain in April 2009.
People still use phrases such as “CORGI registered gas engineer” when looking for boiler help. For a London appointment, those words do not replace today’s checks.
- Then: CORGI registration related to the registration arrangements in place at that time.
- Now: verify current Gas Safe registration, the attending engineer’s identity and qualifications for your job.
An old CORGI reference does not prove current registration, but its presence alone does not establish wrongdoing. Apply the same current checks to repairs, servicing and replacement work.
Find a Gas Safe Registered Engineer for a London Boiler Appointment
Use the Register’s postcode search to find candidates, then verify the individual who will attend and their suitability for your boiler job.
Prepare the job details
have your London postcode, appliance type and whether you need repair, servicing or installation ready.
Contact the business
confirm it accepts the work and can offer an appointment. A listing does not establish availability or a price.
Verify the visitor
request the attending engineer’s details and complete the identity and qualification checks when they arrive.
Include the boiler make and model if known. Finding a registered business is the starting point; checking the actual visitor completes the process.
What to Do If the Card, Register Entry or Job Details Do Not Match
Pause the appointment before gas work begins if identity, registration or relevant qualifications cannot be confirmed.
Card unavailable or expired
request current identification and ask the Register to clarify.
Photograph or name mismatch
contact the booking business to establish who has arrived.
No matching register result
recheck the supplied details with the Register. A missing result alone is not proof of fraud.
Category missing or out of date
ask the Register whether the engineer is currently qualified for the booked work.
Keep gas work paused while the issue remains unresolved. If you suspect unregistered work has already happened, retain existing booking records and describe your concern to Gas Safe Register. Any immediate gas or CO danger takes priority over reporting.
Apply the Same Checks to Our Registration Details
Use the same register, identity and work-category checks when booking with All Service 4 U.
Our legal name is All Service 4 U Limited and our Gas Safe business registration number is 648977. Verify these details independently, then check the attending engineer’s current ID card and qualifications for your appointment. You can also read our Gas Safe registration details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Check a Gas Safe Engineer by Name Alone?
A name alone cannot confirm that the person at your door is the registered engineer you intended to book. HSE’s checking guidance directs consumers to use the engineer’s licence details. Request those details and the business identity, then compare the official result with the visitor. Similar personal names or different trading names need clarification before work begins.
How Can I Check an Engineer Without Internet Access?
Call Gas Safe Register’s consumer helpline on 0800 408 5500 for help checking an engineer, as described in HSE’s consumer guidance. Have the card details and booked work ready. If verification cannot be completed before the visit, wait before allowing gas work. This is the verification helpline; the gas emergency number is 0800 111 999.
Do I Need to Check Again If a Different Engineer Arrives?
Yes, check the identity and relevant qualifications of the engineer who actually arrives. Ask the booking business to clarify the substitution, then compare the new visitor’s card and register details. This applies HSE’s advice to check the person doing the work. A change of engineer is not automatically suspicious, but your earlier check does not identify the replacement.
Does a Plumber Need Gas Safe Registration to Work on Radiators?
Radiator and water-pipe work does not automatically require Gas Safe registration, but work on the gas boiler requires an appropriately registered engineer. HSE distinguishes installing radiators and water pipes from working on the boiler itself, including the final water-pipe connection to it. Clarify exactly what the job involves rather than relying on the title “plumber”.
Does a Boiler Installation Certificate Prove an Engineer Is Registered Today?
No, an installation document does not replace checking current registration and qualifications. Gas Safe Register’s consumer guidance distinguishes a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate for notified installation work from maintenance records. A service record documents servicing; a current engineer check establishes today’s registration and scope. An older CORGI-era document is not invalid merely because the registration body changed. Consider its date and purpose, then check the engineer independently.
Do I Need an Engineer Login to Check the Register?
No, use the public consumer checking service to verify someone you are booking. HSE directs householders to public engineer checks using licence details. The engineer area serves a different purpose, including professional registration and account administration. You do not need to enter that professional registration process to check the person attending your home.
